Quebec
Tinea and Leah: [Cyberpunk, Alien Incursions, Murder and Mayhem, Girl's Love (WLW)]Quebec is presented as a major urban destination at the end of an advancing Antithesis migration, giving the surrounding rural battlefield consequences far beyond the immediate combat zone. Its threatened position transforms the swarm from a manageable source of combat points into a strategic emergency: if the creatures continue along their route, they can reach Quebec and New Montreal after crossing settlements along the St. Lawrence River.
Definition and Setting
Quebec appears in the narrative as one of the megacities bordering the St. Lawrence River. It is mentioned alongside New Montreal as a densely populated urban objective lying beyond the farms, settlements, and mechanized tree farms through which the Antithesis swarm is moving. The relevant battlefield is not inside Quebec itself, but the city defines the scale and urgency of the threat approaching from the surrounding countryside.
The nearby urban environment also includes Saint-Eustache, New Montreal, where the narrative descends beneath a ramp leading toward the megacity proper. That subterranean setting is associated with Antithesis activity and with the creatures' own sensory and reproductive world: an Antithesis individual identifies food, carries it toward its home-place, passes birth-wood as new offspring emerge, and helps kill a sick or malformed member of the brood. The proximity of such a nest environment to the megacity makes Quebec's regional setting inseparable from the nonhuman ecology advancing toward human habitation.
Threat from the Antithesis Swarm
The swarm's projected route gives Quebec its decisive narrative importance. From the combatants' position, it is moving eastward and southward in parallel with a highway. The farms and smaller settlements along that line have already been marked as devoid of inhabitants, but the swarm is continuing toward the St. Lawrence River. If it maintains its course, it will break through several river settlements and then reach Quebec and New Montreal.
The danger is magnified by the swarm's growth. It is already long enough to require another day merely to pass the combatants' area, and it may absorb hundreds of thousands more Antithesis before reaching the megacities. The projected population could exceed one million. Quebec therefore functions as the point at which a local incursion becomes a mass-casualty threat, forcing a decision between continued point-seeking attacks and large-scale bombardment.
Strategic and Technological Context
The approach to Quebec is managed through a network of people, artificial intelligence, weapons, and institutional interfaces rather than by a single commander. The samurai app can locate the red, blotchy swarm and trace its heading, while the local Family acts as a loosely defined authority that connects requests for bombardment with the Samurai capable of pulling the relevant triggers. Quebec's safety is thus mediated through a platform-like military system: territory is rendered as marked locations, the swarm becomes a navigable data object, and destruction is coordinated through distributed users and automated support.
The same distributed logic appears in the equipment used against the Antithesis. The Sentinel is configured for automatic fire and can be guided through a dedicated trigger, while Tynea is trusted to debug commands and handle administrative information. The Myriad provides a battle panel with sensor readings, ammunition levels, autonomous threat detection, and extensive configurable settings; Tynea adjusts those settings and reorganizes the information into a more readable form. Later, when the Quanta expands Tinea's awareness, networked weapons and tools across several kilometers become perceptible as part of a single computational battlefield, including Sentinel projectile-programming facilities and surviving smart bullets. The threatened city is consequently defended through an assemblage in which human intention is repeatedly delegated to AI, weapons, interfaces, and ammunition.
Narrative Significance
Quebec marks the scale at which the book's combat system becomes morally and strategically unstable. Killing Antithesis for points remains an immediate objective, but allowing the swarm to continue growing risks making the eventual bombardment more destructive than the swarm itself. The city turns the point economy and its gamelike interface into a problem of responsibility: a marked destination on an app represents settlements, civilians, and an expanding biological population rather than merely an advantageous target.
Its relation to the Antithesis is also more complicated than a simple opposition between civilized city and alien enemy. Near New Montreal, the Antithesis are shown through their own bodily logic of scent, feeding, birth, nest, and collective elimination of the sick. That perspective does not remove the danger posed to Quebec, but it reveals that the approaching force possesses an organized ecology and internal standards of belonging. Quebec therefore stands at the meeting point of human urban vulnerability, nonhuman collective life, and a technological war system capable of converting both into data, targets, and points.
